A recent graduate from the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) at Canterbury has been shortlisted for an abstract art award.
Jack Sutherland, who is 22 and from Leigh-on-Sea in Essex, was nominated for the Abstract Critical Newcomer Award after his work was seen by a panel of judges at UCA’s end of year Degree Show last June.
The award recognises and rewards graduates who re-define the territory of abstract art and create original and stimulating work.
Jack will exhibit his work alongside the other selected artists and has the opportunity of winning the £5,000 prize.
Jack, who graduated in BA (Hons) Fine Art in 2011, said: “I feel incredibly lucky, excited and nervous about the whole thing.
“To have been selected from degree shows nationwide and have the opportunity to exhibit in a space in London is a great privilege. I am really looking forward to seeing how my paintings interact with the other graduates’ work.
“The work that I will be showing at the exhibition will be a continuation of themes that I was exploring during my time at UCA. Cosmic elements have been worked into my most recent of paintings; the images have been constructed from a variety of scenes stolen from the real and the imagined; from the dreamlike and the impossible.
“While I was studying I was very lucky to be able draw my inspiration from fellow students alongside Brutalist architecture of the 1950 and 60’s. Living close to London I have the opportunity to see this, to witness modernist and post modernist architecture which inspires my work. Literature is also woven into my paintings, especially that of George Orwell and J.G Ballard.”
Jack’s work will be shown at the Kings’s Place Gallery from 30 March 2012 to 20 April 2012 for further details on the exhibition visit www.abstractcritical.com.
